Steel bike bunkers could hit Swansea streets

Storage squeeze

Backed by Welsh Government’s Active Travel Fund, the council has launched a consultation on installing secure “Cyclehoop” hangars in residential areas. Officials say the steel bunkers, already in use across the UK, could give residents with little or no storage space at home a safe place to park their bikes.

Each hangar is designed to hold up to six bicycles under a lockable, weatherproof cover. Residents would be able to rent a space through Cyclehoop on an annual membership basis.

Council call‑out

Andrew Stevens, Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, said:

“Cyclehoop hangars are already being rolled out across the UK, and we’re excited to bring them to Swansea to support local communities. Our aim is to install them in densely populated residential areas where space for bike storage is limited. To ensure we install them where they are most needed, we need the public to get in touch and tell us where they want them to go.”

He added that some residents may have been put off buying a bike in the past due to lack of storage, and that the scheme could encourage more people to cycle.

How to have your say

The consultation runs until 25 January 2026. Residents can give their views online at: www.swansea.gov.uk/cyclestorage.

The council says responses will help decide where the hangars are placed, with final locations to be announced in the new year.

Can anyone recommend vertical wall mount bike storage? After reorganising the garage I’m looking for something that holds the bike at a 90º angle to the wall, wheels first. Something like a SteadyRack or one that hooks round the tyre? I have just enough space between the ceiling and a small drawer unit to hang the bike on the wall… #cycling #cyclistsofmadison #bikes #bikestorage

A bike box goes up in Ballintemple, but Cork City Council says it must come down

Cork City Council has ruled that a bike box in the driveway of a private house on the southside of the city would "set an undesirable precedent for similar future developments in the area."

Friend of mine recently invested in 3D printer and I asked him to print a wall hanger for my Strida LT foldable bike. I got it yesterday and mounted it today.
I wasn’t sure how it will turn up, but it works and looks great. Most importantly, my commuter is now standing vertically without any risk of falling down.
