On our regular Tuesday coffee ride, while enjoying a warm cup, someone said "funny how bike riders don't freak out when gas prices spike". It made me realize I hadn't even noticed, but gas prices are now over $4.00 per gallon in our town. We are fortunate here in Corvallis, Oregon, in that it's a short easy ride to just about anything you need. I can easily mount a couple of panniers on my bike, ride to the grocery store, and come home with a couple of weeks worth of groceries, in less that 5 miles round trip. I realize this is not an option from many people, and I don't mean to guilt trip anyone who doesn't ride a bike. But if you can, and it is an option, it's a great way to save on gas.

And saving on gas is a political statement in our current situation, no matter what you're stance is. If you support Trump's war on Iran then saving gas is the patriotic thing to do. If, like me, you're against all wars, especially wars fought over natural resources, like oil, then saving gas is your stance against the oil companies that manipulate our government into fighting wars on their behest. Remember it was the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (now BP), that finagled the British M16 and the US CIA into overthrowing the democratically elected leader of Iran in 1953 and installing a dictator willing to do their bidding. Same story in Venezuela. When they got tired of US oil companies making huge profits on their oil, they nationalized the oil fields and kicked the US companies out. So of course Trump has to invade an reclaim them for the benefit of the billionaire US oil tycoons.

Many wars have been fought, and many lives lost, over oil. Even if we ignore the environmental impact, that should be enough of a motivation to try and reduce our gas consumption. Riding your bike more is one way you can help. Of course walking is even better. I have neighbors that walk to town everyday. I rarely see them use their car. Any way you do it, lets cut back on our gas consumption.

Should kids learn how to ride a bike in school?
Students at Roslyn Elementary School in Westmount, Que., are learning to ride bicycles safely in gym class. Vélo Québec says these initiatives need to be introduced to kids at a young age because the number of children who know how to ride bicycles is going down each year.

We did two nice road bike rides over the weekend, one on Saturday toward the northern end of the Monterey Bay and the second on Sunday at the southern end. I’m always amazed on a clear day when one can see across the bay how big it is. These photo’s don’t capture what it’s like to see.

It’s apparently one of the largest bays in the world. About 25 miles across and around 60 miles around by car. One source said 90 miles which may be measured along the shoreline with the zig zag small coves and points along the way.

One has to enjoy the silly little pleasures in life.

I was surprised by my Tri Club when I received this small trophy for achieving 1000 road bike miles in 2025. I’m not bragging here, there are people that ride many more miles than I do in a year. And we’re lucky living in the Santa Cruz (CA) area with weather that permits outdoor activities year round.

One has to find the joy in small pleasures, and for some reason this silly little trophy makes me smile.
