Nowadays, it’s more like the opposite: if an aspect of the work of a relief agency is not well understood, it’s better to make sure they go unfunded.

Alexander Maclaren, Scottish Baptist, on Luke 16:19-31, story of Lazarus. If the Rich Man in parable gave crumbs, the sin of his neglect of the sufferer at his gate didn’t keep him out of hell.

Do we expect sufferers around us to be satisfied, and therefore hush up, that we gave them a crumb? Do you see modern preachers promise hell for everything but that in Mt 25 & Lk 16?
