Berthoud Pass is a high mountain pass in Colorado and an ideal spot for outdoor adventures. Reaching an elevation of 11,306 ft above sea level, it is the eleventh-highest paved pass in the state. Open all year-round, Berthoud Pass is a popular destination for hiking, dispersed camping, backcountry skiing and snowboarding, and other outdoor recreation activities. Berthoud Pass is popular for backcountry skiing/snowboarding, but the road leading to the summit of School of Mines Peak has very little avalanche risk, with a windblown slope less than 30 degrees steep and a switchback road with large post markers leading to the summit.
If you want to climb something in winter with low avalanche danger and less difficult navigation this is one of your best options near Denver.
