Sunset Poles

My favourite stretch of beach here in the Netherlands is between Bergen and Hargen. You can find multiple lines of these poles, running into the sea, and wave breakers in the form of stone dams, with loose rocks beside them, offering good foregrounds for seascapes. The best quality of this beach, though, is that there's usually nobody there in the evening. You can be here all by yourself, which is something I very much enjoy.

Soon, a few photography friends and I will be presenting each other our best shots of the past year. And with selecting your best shots, comes the dismissal of the ones you really like, but ultimately don't make the cut. I will be sharing those shots here, in chronological order. This is number 5 of 19.

Sunset

My vacation has started and I kind of miss my daily bicycle commute. And so I decided to cycle roughly 60 kilometres to my favourite beach in the Netherlands. These poles I simply cannot resist. The idea was that I would hopefully enjoy a nice evening here. The sunset surely didn't disappoint. The lovely meal I had before at the only beach pavilion (Paal 29) on an otherwise empty stretch of beach of 5 kilometres, didn't either.

I had decided against bringing my camera, as I wanted to cycle without too much weight. I did bring my small tripod and a phone holder, though. So here's a phone shot of the (almost) sunset at the poles on my favourite beach. What a wonderful way to spend a vacation day. I didn't even really mind the 50 kilometres I had to cycle back in the dark, even though my legs told me differently, once I was home.

Stars

At the Schoorl beach, there is only very little light pollution from the wind turbines at sea. With so little light around to distract you from seeing the night sky, you find yourself surrounded by thousands upon thouands of stars. You feel so immensely tiny when you observe all these countless specks of distant light.

Rocky Beach

After days of wanting to go, yesterday evening I finally actually got the chance to go to the beach. I opted for Schoorl, one of my favourite beaches in the Netherlands. These rocks always offer a nice foreground. Using a long exposure, the retreating sea created a nice blanket of waves around them.
