Music, noise, and revelations: these pavilions touch the most surprising notes.

The most successful, for the second year in a row, is that of the Holy See, focused on the Benedictine Hildegard of Bingen, while Belgium presented the exact opposite of monastic contemplation, with a project full of energy, physicality, and noise. In Spain and Serbia, there is an accumulation of images, elsewhere the theme of water returns strongly (including in the much-discussed Austrian pavilion). The Russian pavilion was a large performance, but only media-focused.

Domani

4 May: feast of St. Ethelred, King of Mercia, who abdicated in 704 to become a #Benedictine monk at Bardney #otd

(Sauber/Croft)

Here's the better bit that I was coming to Daston for:

"What to modern eyes reads as a pendulum swing between stringency and indulgence was to pre-modern sensibilities the only way to formulate a complete rule, both specific and supple" -- Daston, Rules: A Short History of What We Live By

Like I said, a mostly really-smart book!

#Daston #Bookstodon

In fairness to Daston, the discussion goes on to talk about the rule's "extraordinary
resilience and adaptability," and it's that part of the discussion which drew me back to the book, and which I *will* draw on in my own material.

But I was really caught out by the mis-step early in the chapter in ways that hadn't hit me upon first reading.

Every reading is a fresh reading.

"The seventy-three chapters (praecepta) of the Rule of Saint Benedict seem to regulate
every moment and every aspect of monastic life in maniacal detail. If micro-managers have a patron saint, it is surely Saint Benedict." -- Daston, Rules: A Short History of What We Live By

It struck me on this reading how unfortunately glib that assessment is. In a mostly smart book, this moment was funny, but flat-footed

27 Apr 1534: John Wakeman is elected Abbot of the #Benedictine Abbey of Tewkesbury. He received Henry VIII & Anne Boleyn there in summer 1535. Surrendered the house on 9 Jan 1540, & became first bishop of #Gloucester 3 Sept 1541 (SaffronBlaze)
26 Apr 1671: d. Anne Cary, Dame Clementia #otd (BM) foundress, daughter of Henry Falkland, Lord Deputy of #Ireland & Elizabeth Cary [Tanfield], #writer at Our Lady of Good Hope #Benedictine Convent in #Paris
Talk about life on the edge! This is the dramatic, mountainside location of the Monastery of S. Benedetto ("Saint Benedict") clinging to the side of the mountains above the town of #Subiaco, Italy. The place is built around the "Holy Cave" ("Sacro Speco") where Saint Benedict lived as a hermit in the early 6th century.

Amongst the frescoes inside is the only depiction known of St Francis painted during his life.

Special Tg1 - Treasure Hunt - Episode of 04/19/2026

To a Speciale Tg1, during the week of Made in Italy, the story of the hidden face of the luxury market, between Italian excellence, illicit trafficking, and new global routes. The journey begins at the airports of Rome, where currency detection dogs operate, and continues through the ports of Civitavecchia, Naples, and Genoa, strategic hubs for intercepting counterfeit goods and valuables hidden in containers. The cameras then enter the chemical laboratories of Rome and Turin, where jewelry and silverware stolen are analyzed, including so-called “blood diamonds,” used to finance wars and terrorism. The investigation also follows the recycling of stolen watches, among collectors, auction houses, and new digital platforms created by young Italians in Singapore to trace them. In the background, new global economic directions emerge: from the “Cotton Route” of the IMEC corridor, a strategic alternative to the Chinese Silk Road, to the United Arab Emirates, a central hub for luxury and increasingly linked to Italian investments. From Dubai to Vicenza Oro, the reportage lands in the heart of Italian craftsmanship excellence, the world leader in the export of jewelry and worked gold. Finally, the story opens to the historical and symbolic heritage preserved between the Louvre, the treasure of San Gennaro in Naples, and the Benedictine monastery of Senigallia, a treasure trove of thousands of relics. A journey between economy, legality, and international prestige, to discover what value lies hidden behind the “Made in Italy” brand.
