Beware, one devil may hide another,
16th C #benchend with satyre,
St. Mary the Virgin, Charlton Mackrell, #Somerset

Three of the 16th century bench ends at the church of the Holy Ghost, Crowcombe, Somerset. A strange mix of medieval and Renaissance styles, here are two foliate heads, and two men fighting a two-headed dragon. On the Quantock Hills above the church is Shervage Wood, where the story goes that a sleeping wyrm had been cut in two by an unsuspecting woodcutter, who'd sat on it to eat his lunch.

St Mary's Church, East Brent. On the top of a late 15th/early 16th century bench end is this foliate head - wearing a bishop's mitre?
