How to Build a #BeeHotel (Guide with Pictures)

Excerpt: "Many native bee populations have been in steep declines over the years. Some species are actually threatened with extinction. So anything we can do to help mitigate and prevent further damage to bee population will be beneficial. And not just beneficial to the bees, but the rest of the ecosystem, as bees are key pollinators for all the fruits, vegetables, and flowers that we enjoy!

So, in addition to planting native plants, we can create even more habitat for bees by building bee-houses and bee-hotels. And besides looking great in a garden, they can attract some friendly solitary bees! Solitary bees live by themselves, and don’t have a queen/hive. They only sting if threatened, get caught up in clothing, or are stepped on. So they are a minimal risk to people/pets.

And, many of these solitary and native bees are better for pollinating your flowers and vegetables than honey bees……."

Building a bee hotel can be a fun activity and great way to attract pollinators to your garden!  There are many different styles to choose…

I bought bobba paper straws and I recycled a protein powder container and a piece of old real estate sign and I made a bee hotel. Can't wait to install it outside.

The overwhelming urge to do something constructive in the garden - but not too constructive because it's hot out there - came upon me and so I've had a delightful time drilling holes in the wood pile at the end of the garden to help insects. Ideally, would love some more bees to take up residence, of course.

I've said it before and I'll say it again but more nuanced: "_Some_ mason bees are sloppy workers". Some tubes are closed off with the finesse I would not mind to see on my plastered walls. And others(?) just drop the food for their offspring on the doorstep. At least, the yellow stuff must be pollen originally meant for the offspring, right? Or has gold-colored plaster become a thing?

Five second video of a parasitic cuckoo wasp at one of my insect hotels. I love how their antennae are always in motion. And their huge eyes. And their metallic color. But huge pain to ID. #InsectHotel #BeeHotel #CuckooWasp #chrysididae #insects #bees #wasps
Earlier this week I noticed that one of the Georgia mason bees (Osmia georgica) at the front-yard insect hotel had capped off her nest. They use masticated leaves and nectar. Not sure what the white things are. She's since moved on to another paper straw. So busy! #InsectHotel #BeeHotel #bees #insects #pollinators #osmia
I wished I could house ALL THE BEES but my bee hotels are full and still more are coming, looking for a place to nest 🥺

Georgia mason bee (Osmia georgica) exiting her nesting tunnel after depositing a load of pollen. I don't think I've ever seen one on any of the flowers in my yard but they are supposed to be generalists. That said, it's reported (by Paula Sharp & Ross Eatman) that they adore fleabane, positioning their head in the center of the flower and spinning around. #MasonBee #InsectHotel #BeeHotel #osmia #bee #bees #insect
