Hollywood Burbank KBUR → Santa Barbara Municipal KSBA

This time, there was no GPS involved. I navigated by hopping from VOR to VOR, with all frequencies and courses dialled-in manually.

On closer inspection, the VOR sites were visible on the ground when crossing them.

By choosing the Beechcraft Bonanza this time, I've now flown a different aircraft on each of the five legs of the current journey.

Imperial Beach KNRS → Calexico International KCXL

As promised, a new adventure begins.

Takeoff just before sunrise in Imperial Beach: The colors of the clouds hint at a spectacular dawn. And I wasn’t disappointed.

A little fun with city names: Today's destination Calexico sits just north of the Mexican border, with a city named Mexicali waiting on the other side.

Helgoland-Düne EDXH → St. Michaelisdonn EDXM

A little filler until the next big journey starts.

The Beechcraft Bonanza brought me in perfect weather from Helgoland to the eastern side of the Elbe estuary. From here, I will sporadically continue heading south.

But first things first: Tomorrow marks the beginning of a new adventure along the West Coast of North America. Stay tuned.

Charleston International KCHS → Savannah/Hilton Head International KSAV

Early in the morning, before sunrise, I set off for the next leg, again in the King Air 350i. The ILS approach to Runway 01 in Savannah is quite exciting because here a DME arc with a 14 nm radius is flown: A first for me and I had to do it twice (cockpit image below is from the first, not successful try ;-))

Cape Fear Regional KSUT → Charleston International KCHS

A few more miles along the coast in the King Air 350. This plane is so much fun! The weather is exciting these days, I'm observing some pretty gusty winds. The autopilot doesn't mind, but I definitely break a sweat sometimes during the landings.

It’s been a while since I last flew the King Air 350, and I thought today would be a good opportunity. It’s loud, but it flies like a dream. “Time flew by” (get this?) and the ground had me back in no time.

"#Onthisday in 1903, Olive Ann Beech (née Mellor) was born in Kansas. She began her aviation career as a bookkeeper and secretary at Travel Air Manufacturing Company in 1925. She soon moved up in the company to become the personal secretary of Walter Beech, one of the co-founders of Travel Air Manufacturing Company. They married in 1930 and when that company was sold, Walter and Olive Ann established their own company, Beechcraft in 1932. When Walter became ill in 1940, she took control of the company, and when he died in 1950, she became company president, becoming the first woman to head a major aircraft corporation. She led the company through WWII, the space race into the 1980s. In 1980, the Raytheon Company acquired Beechcraft and Olive Ann was elected to the Board of Directors.
