"#BeakedWhales' long, deep dives mean they're difficult to study... They're often offshore, they're hard to access, and hard to see... A #NewSpecies, Ramari's beaked #whale, was discovered as recently as 2021... Using underwater microphones, scientists are listening to beaked #whales' echolocation clicks and buzzes... Each species has a unique pulse, an audio signature that tells scientists which is which."

Experts are baffled as rarely seen beaked whales are involved in a series of strandings.

A series of strandings of one of the world’s deepest dwelling and most rarely seen types of whale in the last few days across northern Europe have left scientists trying to understand why so many of the deep-diving whales have appeared.

Scientists & ocean experts have found compelling data correlating the 2010 #DeepwaterHorizon #oilspill – a disaster that produced a 149,000-square-kilometre ocean oil slick in the #GulfOfMexico – with steep declines in #whale & #dolphin populations in the region.

Findings document a decline by as much as 30% for #spermwhales & a staggering 80% for #beakedwhales since the spill.

Unusual use of shallow habitats may be evidence of a cultural tradition in Baird's beaked #whales https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0003347224000058

"The studied population of Baird's #BeakedWhales came close to the coast—within four km of land, and they were observed in shallow water, less than 300 meters."

Surprising behavior in one of the least studied mammals in the world

Some animals live in such remote and inaccessible regions of the globe that it is nearly impossible to study them in their natural habitats. Beaked whales, of which 24 species have been found so far, are among them: They live far from land and in deep oceanic waters, where they search for food at depths of 500 meters and more.
