Old growth trees being transported on #bchwy19 near #Nanaimo this morning.

I would guess this is just one tree, likely transported by several truck loads. Looks like a western red cedar, about 200-300 years old.

They are still logging these in previously reserved areas along the Alberni Inlet (Nahmint) and on the North Island. 😒

These were in 8-10ft chunks on the truck. Not sure what their destination would be. Possibly chipoing for pulp/paper or πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

A total open fire ban starts today which usually means the forests shut down.

Not sure if that is the case, as the fire danger is not extreme but any reason to stop cutting these elders would be worth it.

Got to walk across an empty Highway 19 on a green light in the opposite direction. πŸ˜‚ 🚦

The entire highway is closed between the south Nanaimo interchange and Northfield Road. (about 10km).

All due to a big accident apparently earlier this morning. Thankfully, I usually park across the highway at what is known as the cheap seats lol

So I took the back road/detour. Ended up delayed about 30 minutes.

I like taking Hilliers Rd just after the #bchwy19 and #bchwy4 interchange. This used to be the old "shortcut" to go to Qualicum before the Inland Island Highway happened. Love this farm. Picturesque all seasons of the year.

The highway cams along #bchwy19 and #bchwy4 look like snow is concentrated near Buckley Bay on the north and then from Woodgrove to College Drive in Nanaimo. Compact snow in most places. Drive carefully if you are commuting.

The Hump is not bad but Sutton Pass looks snowy. Lots of snow on the West Coast!

Images are from Buckley Bay, Aulds Road (Woodgrove) and College Drive (VIU) and Taylor River.
Snowfall Warning for East Vancouver Island today

Quite a bit of snow in the mix on the radar around Central VI. If you are driving today take care on the mountain passes. You might see some rain/snow mix particularly heavy rain could turn quickly to wet snow.

Interesting drive in this morning. There are already warmer patches of air in different places along the route from #PortAlberni to Nanaimo. -7 in Port and on the Hump, but only -1 at Cameron Lake. Then back down to -5 in #Qualicum and -7 in Nanoose and #Nanaimo.

We'll see how this all plays out tomorrow night as the Pacific moisture comes back in.

Radar shows snow headed toward Parksville. Strongest just north of Nanoose Bay. That hill can be treacherous.

When there is chaos on the highways and they are all closed, maybe a true alternative is needed? πŸš† πŸš‚
