With a long lens, a small break in the foliage, and the eagle eye of @kcscrimshaw , I was lucky enough to spy this beauty a few weeks ago. Despite living in a refuge with hundreds of acres of protected wilderness, she chose to build her nest close to a public pathway. California Scrub Jay (perched fittingly on scrub). I have yet to meet a jay I haven't just adored. The rarity of the scrub jay this far north made meeting them quite a treat (thanks to a tip from @kcscrimshaw). They stayed true to the Jay code- vocal, and somehow simultaneously bossy and sweet.

Killdeer and her "nest" of Eggs
I did not need to worry that I was disturbing her, as she laid her eggs directly next to a busy railway track- I snapped the photo on the other side of the tracks between trains passing through! I can't figure out if the nest location was brilliant (fewer predators hanging around tracks) or profoundly silly- as even precocial babies are pretty limited on world experience that might tell them not to hang out on rails! Her success certainly lays in camouflage- I barely noticed her and almost missed the eggs altogether!
