The Bay Bridge I-80 E is totally wrecked tonight…

My partner has been stuck in San Francisco traffic for over an hour trying to get home to Oakland and will likely be stuck another 30+ minutes.

As of 8:04 PM, CHP reports that there is a severe traffic alert and police department activity on eastbound I-80 west of Treasure Island Rd in San Francisco. The left lane is now open; the right lanes remain blocked. Motorists are advised to expect delays and to use alternate routes to avoid the area. There is no estimated time to reopen the roadway.”

Lesser known and slightly older than the Golden Gate Bridge, the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was designed by Charles H. Purcell and opened six months before the Golden Gate Bridge, on on this day in 1936. The older western section is named after former San Francisco Mayor and California State Assembly Speaker Willie L. Brown Jr. The newer, East Span of the bridge reopened in 2013, has the distinction of holding the Guinness World Record for the widest bridge, at 258.33 ft wide.
