Visited #BletchleyPark yesterday. Just fantastic!

I spent the whole day there, 10am - 5pm, and I still didn't manage to see everything!

I also enjoyed one of the free guided tours with one of the very knowledgeable volunteers who clearly had a lot more to tell than the 1hr allowed.

For #InternationalWomensDay (3/4 of those at BP were women), there are interactive activities - I really enjoyed writing messages in #Baudot-Murray code and manually punching holes in paper cards.

Here is what my tiny BASIC interpreter would write to a five-channel paper tape. There are no characters like < = > or even + or * in the CCITT-2 encoding, so they are replaced with two-character keywords or alternative characters. For example, + is & and * is !. When reading back baudot-encoded programs, these keywords and characters are translated back to their original form.

The latest prototype of my tiny BASIC interpreter can save programs in CCITT-2 encoding, so it can in theory write programs to 5-channel paper tape. I have a paper tape punch, but it has an RS530 interface, so I need a converter to RS232, which seems to be hard to come by these days. I bought a used one that is supposed to be in "good working condition", but comes without any documentation. Why am I even doing this? :)

Steven Heller’s Font of the Month: Baudot

Steven Heller takes a closer look at Barnbrook Fonts’ bold and angular font family, Hopeless Diamond.Steven Heller takes a closer look at Beast of England’s new Acorn font family in this latest issue of Font of the Month.Somewhere, squirreled away in almost every pre-digital graphic designer’s flat files near to the old rubber cement remover and the hand-roller used for flattening out galleys, under the piles of rubylith, a box of ruling tape and a T-square from the ancient paste-up days, is a small collection of dry transfer type sheets (also known as press type). For those who were unborn or infants during the sixties and early seventies when phototype was sometimes too expensive, transfer letters, which came in many styles and weights, were the go-to substitute.
