Weekly output: Google’s live lane guidance, Candela’s battery-electric hydrofoils

LISBON–I traveled here to speak at my ninth Web Summit conference in Europe via another EU city that I’m quite fond of, Barcelona. The Mozilla Foundation had the good taste to host its Mozilla Festival there and then provide me with a travel stipend to cover the event, so of course I was willing to start my Web Summit trip a few days early. Even though that left me little time at home between working a 15-hour day Tuesday as an election officer and then heading to Dulles Airport Wednesday afternoon.

11/4/2025: Safe to Go? Google Maps Adds ‘Live Lane Guidance’ for Polestar 4 EVs, PCMag

PCMag had two stories under my byline this week, and this was the one I actually wrote this week to cover an update to the built-in Google navigation in one of Polestar’s battery-electric vehicles. The other involved my editor updating a post I wrote in May about President Trump withdrawing his nomination of private astronaut and payments billionaire Jared Isaacman as NASA administrator, the new plot twist being that Trump had changed his mind again and had re-nominated Isaacman. I realize how confusing that last sentence can look. 

11/7/2025: This battery-electric hydrofoil could supercharge a ferry transformation, Fast Company

Two years after getting an introduction to the Swedish startup Candela’s battery-electric hydrofoil sport boats on the San Francisco Bay, I enjoyed an update of the experience on waters I know much better–the Potomac and the Anacostia. With a longer word count than I had for that PCMag report in the summer of 2023, I went into much more detail about Candela’s ambitions to get into the passenger-ferry business, its likely competition in that market, and potential obstacles to electrifying ferries.

@glitzersachen @leanlearnlead granted the faster a battery is charged, the less efficient it is and the more straining it is on the battery chemistry.

• That's an inherent problem with any #BatteryElectricVehicle and the reason why (electrochemically produced!) #Methanol (doesn't require high-pressure-systems like #Hydrogen!) & #FuelCells are the superior solution longterm, as those solves the #EnergyDensity, #ChargingSpeed and #EnergyStorage problems whilst allowing the replacement and conversion of emergency power sources to the use of a renewable fuel.

But aside from that, there's no reason why #BEV #Charging needs to be more complex than these few steps;

1. plug in the vehicle with a CCS2 plug
2. select the amount of kWh / money one.wants to spend. (being able to abort if the energy price is abdurdly high!)
3. pay with card (NFC+PIN).
4. upon payment confirmation, the vehucle gets charged and the charging station shows an estimated completion timer & offers sending a notification via eMail or SMS.
5. Once completed, the charging station will unlock the plug/socket and send said notification out. In the meantime another customer could just pull the unlocked plug and start their charging.

Just like on a (abeit slow) gas pump!

One reason I couldn’t unplug from work last Sunday: I had to watch my friend Sean Gallagher’s very good walkthrough of pig-butchering scams at the ShmooCon information-security conference in D.C. I did, however, opt to watch the livestream of his talk that morning instead of heading over to the Washington Hilton for the third day in a row.

1/17/2024: NextGen TV Airwave Upgrade Flies Under the Radar at CES, PCMag

This CES recap ran several days after the show ended because I needed to verify some Consumer Technology Association forecasts of sales of NextGen-equipped TV sets. And because I needed some uninterrupted time to finish writing the thing.

1/19/2024: Biden Admin OKs $150 Million in Grants to Fix Broken Public EV Chargers, PCMag

I spent Thursday afternoon at the Washington Auto Show’s public-policy day and came away with this update on the Biden administration’s latest efforts to ease electric-car adoption, in which I also noted how the White House’s plan to underwrite a nationwide network of fast chargers on highways has yet to yield much usable hardware. I ended the post by calling out ignorant remarks by two Republican congressmen on a panel that afternoon in which they characterized EVs as some sort of big-government plot.

1/19/2024: Ep 96 SmartTechCheck Podcast CES 2024 Recap, Mark Vena

I joined my industry-analyst friend’s podcast to compare notes about CES with Mark and my fellow tech scribe Stewart Wolpin–who drew on his deep knowledge of the business with a recap of the slow and halting adoption of color TV when our host asked about bumps in the road to EV adoption.
