@cstross
One of the short SF stories in #Nature #Futures described the situation of a simulated or copied rather than wholly artificial machine intelligence, once human, which had been put in a phenomenal number of jars and shaken, and then discarded, of course, over a long period into the future.

Seemed bad.

One of the #basilisks , perhaps.

Writes author Mira Grant: "Anyone who thinks cryptozoology is the study of the impossible has never really taken a very good look at the so-called 'natural world'. Once you get past the megamouth sharks, naked mole rates, and spotted hyenas, then the basilisks, dragons, and cuckoos just don't seem that unreasonable. Unpleasant, yes, but unreasonable? Not really."

Basilisks were everywhere and I took photos of all of them because they are so cute and expressive.

Male and female basilisks.

Taking photos in the rain forest was challenging. You could be standing in bright sun and then 20 ft away be in almost complete darkness under the tree canopy.

Have you heard of the Jesus Christ lizard? Also known as Basilisk?
It can stand up and run on water.
Here is a baby basilisk (yes, he already know how to run on water).

Fascinating stuff about the Basilisk, other than the fact that they can run on water.

"[Darren Naish] I’m very fond of these large, attractive lizards and hope to see them in the wild some day. As should be clear, there’s a lot to say about basilisks beyond the water-running behaviour, and even that turns out to be more complex and nuanced than usually explained."

The Remarkable Basilisks — Tetrapod Zoology

Way back in 2009 (the ScienceBlogs years) I published a Tetrapod Zoology article titled ‘ Tell me something new about basilisks, puh-lease ’ wherein I lamented the fact that people only ever say the same one thing about basilisks. Aware that there’s all too little squamate content here at Tetrapod
