Dverghamrar, die „Zwergenklippen“, sind eine Sammlung auffällig geformter Basaltsäulen, die von alten Legenden umwoben sind. In der isländischen Folklore sollen hier einst Zwerge und Elfen gelebt haben. Die Formation liegt direkt an der Ringstraße und ist ein eindrucksvolles Beispiel für Islands geologische Vielfalt.

Die flache Basaltformation Kirkjugólf wirkt wie ein kunstvoll verlegter Kirchenboden, ist aber ein natürlich entstandenes Phänomen. Die sechseckigen Basaltsäulen wurden durch langsames Abkühlen von Lava geformt und später von einem Gletscher abgeschliffen. Nur die Oberseiten der Säulen sind sichtbar, was den Eindruck eines gepflasterten Bodens verstärkt.

Steep mountains - that dominate #FaroeIslands landscape - are of #volcanic origin. Dark layers of #basalt alternate with the softer layers of reddish #tuff - stone made up of volcanic ashes.

These steep mountainsides are called #hamar (rocky wall). At the base a collection of broken rock fragments - called #scree - can quite often be found.
