Researchers calculated how disturbances like #wildfires, storms, and #barkbeetles, fueled by #climatechange, could transform Europe’s forests by 2100. #ForestDamage could increase, especially in Southern and Western Europe: http://go.tum.de/187640

How fires, storms, and bark beetles will shape the future of Europe’s forests

Wildfires, storms, and bark beetles have a major impact on forests and the benefits they provide for people and the environment. For the first time, a…

@DavidSD yes. Very interesting paper : #droughtstress and #barkbeetles caused in 2018-2020 a strong tree mortality and thus a widespread #ForestDisturbance across Central Europe. The authors observed post-disturbance regeneration in nearly 900 plots across 10 countries : the good news: recovery was robust. The bad news : 75% of the regenerating seedlings are projected to be **outside of their climatic niche** by the end of the century under even moderate #climatechange (RCP4.5)
This suggests to me that "leaving forests alone" is not the best way to adapt them to #ClimateChange. There is just not sufficient local #Biodiversity

"a bark beetle can co-opt a tree's defensive compounds to make defenses against its own enemies. However, since one of the enemies, the #fungus Beauveria bassiana, has developed the ability to detoxify these antimicrobial defenses, it can successfully infect the #BarkBeetles and thus actually help the tree in its battle against bark #beetles"

... look pretty, but unfortunately they are the work of hungry #barkBeetles, which have severely decimated the spruce monocultures(!)

Just what we need, more stress on our #environment. #BarkBeetles are doing damage throughout the northern boreal #forests with the help of the #ClimateCrisis. In NY and PA (and likely further), ash trees have been decimated.

The end of the great northern forests? The tiny tree-killing beetle wreaking havoc on our ancient giants

Forests across Europe, the US and Canada have been hard hit by drought, fires and bark beetles. Now scientists fear the northern hemisphere’s greatest carbon sink is nearing a tipping point
