When I went to the Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris I visited Balzac's grave. There were two older Chinese tourists next to me. We just stared at Balzac's grave in silence for a few minutes together, like he was our grandpa or something. I asked them if they were familiar with Balzac's writing. The woman in broken English said yes, and that "all the intellectuals in China read Balzac." #books #balzac

Honoroe de Balzac - Lost Illusions. Classic brick of a novel. Perhaps his best. 2nd time reading. The plot is essentially a rags-to-riches, back to rags, finally landing somewhere in between. Lucien, a callow looksmaxxing townie and aspiring poet, moves to Paris, gets in with society circles, screws everyone over on his path to success, then Paris society disposes of him. As he contemplates suicide along a sad journey home he meets a Spanish priest who talks him out if it.
