Baldur's Gate 2 (And Probably The Original) Reportedly Getting Remakes

BioWare’s Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate 2, some of the most critically acclaimed RPGs of all time, are reportedly being remade.  According to PC Gamer, Dungeons & Dragons parent company Wizards of the Coast is specifically working on a Baldur’s Gate 2 remake, but states that from what it’s heard, a remake of the original...

A Baldur’s Gate 2 Remake Is In The Works, Apparently

You must gather your party before venturing forth. Or, in this case, your remakes, because a new report claims that Baldur’s Gate 2, and probably the first game as well, are in the process of being remade right now.

So says Fraser Brown of PC Gamer, anyway. The website has apparently learned that former BioWare developer and Baldur’s Gate 2 co-lead designer Kevin Martens is working on the project. Marten’s has been working with Wizards of the Coast on Exodus, an upcoming sci-fi RPG that looks very promising, making this rumour more likely.

PC Gamer says their source only specifically mentioned Baldur’s Gate 2, but as they rightfully point out, it’s a direct continuation of the first game, so it would be a bit odd to remake only the second game. Therefore, the obvious conclusion is that both games are being remade simultaneously.

Both titles were previously remastered, but they launched with a lot of bugs and problems – less than ideal for a pair of iconic RPGs. A remake opens the door for a much grander project, and also one that could see major changes made, if the development team feels brave enough to tinker with something so beloved.

Could the remakes be made on the same engine as the epic Baldur’s Gate 3? Possibly. It’s actually Larian’s own proprietary engine, but if the two could reach some sort of deal, then Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2 could be designed to feel closer to Baldur’s Gate 3. That, to my mind, would make a lot of sense, but Larian have openly said they are done with Baldur’s Gate for the moment. Would they be interested in licensing their engine, especially since it would probably mean giving up some resources to support Wizards of the Coast developing on it?

It’s also worth considering that Baldur’s Gate 2 is a big game. A remake is already a lot of work, but making major changes to bring it in line with Baldur’s Gate 3 would require a lot of extra time and money that isn’t guaranteed to be recouped.
