NO NO NO Brain stop it!
We don't write a Pun inspired story where we stupidly rewrite H.G. Wells time machine into a piece where a time traveler sets Wells up to creating Steamrollers instead...
It because my German brain wants to write the Steam machine by H.G. Wallz.
In German Steamrollers are called Dampfwalze
(Dampf - steam Walze - roller)...
And no brain we don't take on the mantle of H.G. Wallz either and quadruple No we don't use H.R. Gigercounter ...
I hate my brain sometimes.
An anonymous Google forms document where I ask various questions about why someone has blocked me just to gauge an idea of the most popular reasoning
...and just as other cities across the country are ditching Flock & their "gunshot location technology", the press release comes out that a city local to us is adopting ShotSpotter. 😠

Used successfully in more than 180 cities nationwide, ShotSpotter technology shortens the average dispatch time from an average of 4.5 minutes to just 60 seconds or less. This rapid response helps police identify offenders more quickly and—if someone is struck by gunfire—gives officers a better chance to save someone’s life. Nationwide, approximately 80% of gunfire incidents go unreported to 9-1-1. Now, by identifying incidents of gunfire that might otherwise go unreported, officers can recover critical evidence and generate intelligence that helps them more effectively address gun violence in their community. No-one really likes engineering war stories, but this one's relevant because there's a moral to it. I've talked before about defining technical debt as technical decisions that provide immediate value, but with long-term negative impact if they aren't cleaned up. Sometimes introducing technical debt is necessary and you do it
@PoliceStateUK : I commented on this effort before in https://todon.nl/@ErikvanStraten/115242968564739029.
In short:
1) The problem is lack of aid in parts of Gaza, not lack of aid waiting to enter the Strip.
2) Remote authentication is HARD: there are a lot of impersonators all over the world (looking for easy money).
3) Donating to individuals in Gaza increases inequality and local crime.
4) In addition: people may believe this to be a better initiative then donating to e.g. the Red Cross.
5) Israel may abuse this effort to claim that useful "aid" *does* reach Gazans.
It makes no sense to help a few Gazans while 2 million are starving (those without communication facilities having no chance at all).
If people REALLY want to do something useful: call upon your government to stop facilitating genocide by supporting Israel.

@Anawan@mas.to : undoubtly Aral's intentions are good. However, even if I'd have the money, I would definitely not donate like this under the current circumstances. Reasons: • The problem is not lack of aid (there's plenty waiting in Jordan, Egypt and Israel) - the problem is getting it into Gaza and distribute it fairly to everyone in need (prioritising the most vulnerable people). • Remote authentication is extremely unreliable. Chances are huge that your money will flow straight into the pockets of impostors claiming to be victims in Gaza - but may actually live on the other side of the world. • Giving money to selected people will cause them to benefit personally from buying food and other aid distributed by criminals. That wouldn't be such a big problem if said aid was not withheld from people who cannot afford it and need it most. Donating to one or more of the world-wide aid organisations is less discriminating, a lot fairer and helps combatting crime (theft of aid). @aral@mastodon.ar.al @joynewacc@mastodon.social #GazaAid #AidDistribution #FairShare #Donations #GazaAid #FrancescaAlbaneseIsRight
