¿Sabían que Robert Baden-Powell, fundador del Movimiento Scout en 1908, diseñó las bases del escultismo basándose en sus experiencias militares de reconocimiento y supervivencia durante el sitio de Mafeking en la Segunda Guerra Bóer?

En 1899, ante la escasez de soldados, Baden-Powell organizó un cuerpo de cadetes compuesto por jóvenes locales para realizar tareas de mensajería, vigilancia y transporte de heridos. La eficacia de estos jóvenes, que demostraron disciplina y recursos bajo presión, le llevó a redactar el manual "Aids to Scouting" (Ayudas para el Escultismo), originalmente destinado a la formación de soldados, pero que inesperadamente se convirtió en un éxito de ventas entre educadores y jóvenes civiles en Gran Bretaña.

Tras notar este interés, Baden-Powell reescribió sus principios militares hacia un enfoque educativo y pacífico en su obra "Scouting for Boys" (Escultismo para muchachos), publicada tras realizar el primer campamento experimental en la isla de Brownsea en 1907 con 20 jóvenes de distintas clases sociales. El diseño del uniforme scout, incluyendo el uso de la pañoleta y el sombrero de ala ancha, fue una adaptación directa del vestuario funcional que utilizó su regimiento en África para protegerse del sol y el polvo. El movimiento se expandió globalmente con tal rapidez que para 1910 ya contaba con más de cien mil miembros en el Reino Unido, estableciendo una estructura jerárquica y un sistema de insignias de mérito que buscaba desarrollar el carácter, la salud y la preparación técnica de la juventud sin distinción de origen.

I dabbled in Cubs and Scouts in my youth but never very serious but, as an adult, I've found it to be the perfect blend of community service and youth work.

I'm proud to be involved with Scouting and hope to continue for many years to come.

Os Afro-sambas (Brazilian Portuguese: [uz afɾoˈsɐ̃bɐs]) is a 1966 studio album by Baden Powell and Vinícius de Moraes.

Considered a watershed (the original live recording) in MPB for fusing various elements of African sound with samba, Os Afro-sambas was recorded by Baden Powell, Vinícius de Moraes, and Quarteto em Cy in 1966.

In the mid-1960s Vinícius was fascinated by an LP of samba de roda songs with candomblé influences from Bahia. Baden Powell had also gone to Bahia and heard the songs of the Bahian candomblé. From this mutual enchantment with samba and religiosity found in Bahia, the Afro-sambas project emerged. The eight songs have a rich and unique musicality: a mix of candomblé and umbanda instruments (like atabaques and afoxés) with timbres common to Brazilian music (agogôs, the flute, and pandeiros). - Wikipedia
