Following a report on the situation with Social Media and bots, Lewis Stuart of University of Nottingham is inspired to see just how easy it is to fire up his own botnet and puts them to work on a fake social media site: 'scroll hole.'

Im gesamten Januar waren es 1192 Browser, die zum ersten (!) Mal auf meine Webseite zugreifen wollten, davon wurden 1134 (95%) geblockt. Netscape Navigator 5 ist angeblich immer noch unterwegs.
My plugin blocks old and suspicious browsers (user agents). It also generates statistics. So far this month, 1038 out of 1134 browsers have been blocked (92%). 745 browsers visited my website for the first time this month. Of these, 719 (97%) were blocked! That really surprised me.

So, someone in the issue made me realize that some bots impersonate the user agents of big actors, such as Googlebot. I checked my webserver logs and found a lot of them actually!
I liked the challenge, so I just wrote an article about how to do this in less than 40 SLOC 🏆
