🌧️ The rain is tapping on the tin roof, the fog is settling into the hollers, and supper is as Appalachian as it gets: homemade dumplings swimming in creamy gravy. Simple and comforting.

Some folks chase fancy meals but those have never impressed me or tempted me. Around here, in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Southern Appalachia, comfort comes in a bowl, served hot after a long day and shared with the #BabySharks (Yorkie puppies). It's the kind of meal that slows time down and makes a rainy mountain evening feel just right.

Porch Patrol Report 🐾

The Appalachian Yorkie Neighborhood Watch is officially on duty and today the lawn guy is on surveillance.

Trust me when I say that the three of them so still and focused never ever happens! It is usually non stop activity with the #BabySharks.

From their favorite window perch in our mountain bungalow, Gracie, Buzz, and their supervisor, Auggie Doggie, are keeping a close eye on that lawnmower.

Honestly, there's no better way to spend an #Appalachian afternoon than watching the world go by with the #sunshine beams coming in through the window and watching the world go by one wag at a time.

❤️ Life is slower here. And that's exactly the point.

Yard Renovations 🌧️

We’ve had ongoing #flooding in the yard, and after one too many heavy rains, we decided it was time to fix the problem the right way. When we first looked at the Bungalow to purchase, I sunk down a bit in the squishy back yard. Then the #Airstream sunk down a bit in the squishy back yard.

Then a deluge of rain within 24 hours happened.... so last week we installed French drains to help move water away from the house and keep the ground from staying saturated.

Right now, the yard is torn up with #trenches and piles of soil, and it’s not the prettiest stage and I keep reminding myself that this is part of the process. The goal is a #yard that drains properly, stays healthier, and holds up better through the seasons. But, dang, what was pretty green #grass is now full on dirt. And the #BabySharks are not happy it happened in their small play yard.

The Baby Sharks are still on porch patrol, watching every step, while we practice patience and trust the long-term plan. 💙

but really it should say “Beware: Two Fierce Yorkie Bouncers.” 🐾

These two, the #BabySharks, are running a full-time security operation with their supervisor, Auggie Doggie (trotting up from the yard). Trespassers will be licked, sniffed, and possibly barked at until you surrender doggie treats.... or your shoelaces. 🐶😂

Sometimes the security team needs a little shut eye strategy or at least make the #BabySharks take an extra shift. Don’t worry though because nobody got past our porch without a bark or, actually, several barks.

🐈 No Calli the Cat sighting today but Smokey the Cat made an extremely brief appearance. 🐈‍⬛ Sure hope those two are on the mouse patrol duty today.

🌄 *Early morning tea on the land* 🌿
Woke up to a crisp chill rolling through the Blue Ridge Mountains this morning. It is the kind of crispness that whispers fall is on its way despite it being only August. Steam curling from my mug, hands wrapped around for warmth, surrounded by the quiet hum of the #Appalachian woods waking up.

No traffic. No rush. Just birdsong, dew-soaked grass, and the stillness of being present. Well, until the #BabySharks (the Yorkies) start to run, play, and bark at the sky. 😂🌅

Calli the Cat made a brief appearance too.

These are the moments I moved here for.
