you're at your local library looking through what they have to offer, dragging a finger along the spines of the many tomes on offer, seeing what catches your eye... until you see something unlike the others. a brightly colored splash amidst a sea of typical bland colors, you prod your finger at the top and pull it out. it's an old potty training book for toddlers... you remember this one actually, so there is a twinge of nostalgia as you run your eyes across the bubbly font and silly cartoon animal on the front. it's not exactly what you were looking for, but a quick peak so satisfy your inner child couldn't hurt... right? mmm, no, no, that's for babies! you put it back on the shelf and continue your search for reading material.
you find a nice quiet place to sit down with your pile of checked out books, cracking open a few just to check them out. they just don't grab you very well, and end up boring you within the first couple chapters. just as you begin to consider returning those books, you see it in your stack: the potty training book you had put back on the shelf! you were sure it was placed neatly into its previous resting place, so how did it end up back here? had someone played a prank on you while you weren't looking? surely not, it's so quiet you'd be sure to hear anybody approach you, no matter how deep into a book you were... well, either way, here it is, staring back at you once again.
you look it over once again. yup, it sure is the same copy you saw on the shelf a bit ago, even down to the small imperfections on the cover from years of being handled by assumedly kids of younger ages, or at least their parents trying to help them get away from needing diapers slowly but surely. you run your fingers across the cover once more, and finally decide to give in, gripping the edge and flipping it over, being greeted by illustrations of a small goat stuck in potty training and small bits of narration describing what was happening. you scan each page and take in the art, it's just as cute as you remember, very simple and drawn in a crayon style, easy for younger audiences to understand.
you go page by page, but, something strange starts to occur: you feel the what was once very light book start to feel heavier and heavier, becoming difficult to hold up as you flip the pages... but you quickly realize it's not because the book is getting heavier, but you're getting smaller and weaker! the room starts to swirl and contort around you, everything seeming larger, giving you a sort of reverse vertigo feeling, causing you to drop the book, softly landing on the ground. you look at the pages and start to panic even more when you realize something: you can now barely read what was written, the words just seeming more like incomprehensible gibberish by the second. even your thoughts are starting to simplify, only being able to associate objects with feelings.
it all very quickly becomes overwhelming, you're new stature and brain slowly being dumbed down, you try to talk to yourself to gather your thoughts(or at least what's left of them), but nothing comes out besides babbles and gurgles. you sit down to try to get i together but then the final straw breaks: a very recognizable crinkle sounds out. suddenly you feel the thickness around your waist and lower area. you are wearing. a diaper. a diaper with a very easy to recognize character too! the same one from the book you were attempting to read. all of these emotions start to well up, thus leading to only one outcome. you cry. you cry a lot. tears stream down your face, your mind is just a whirlpool of incomprehensible thoughts and feelings, all swirling down slowly...
"oh my, i thought i heard a distressed youngling!" an older woman in a long dress and slightly gray hair turns the corner and approaches you. you try to back away but you don't get very far considering your new body dropped your mobility skills to near zero. she scoops you up in her arms cooing at you gently and smooching your head. she's very warm... and she smells nice. you very quickly forget what even had you upset in the first place, quickly taking comfort in the nice smelling stranger's arms. "well, you sure warmed up quick! wonder how you got away from the others anyway! most of the tots looove story and snack time! i'll just have to take you back to the others..."
