Bottles for feeding kids have a long history! Here's a Roman and a medieval one, alongside the replicas that I made. The very round Roman bottle was found in NL (collection RMO, Leiden). The medieval jug is dated 1350-1400 (museum Boijmans van Beuningen).

I should have been more suspicious when Daddy told me he had a surprise for me at work. Every new “surprise” he promised had come with its own form of humiliation. A crib, a high chair, a car seat…but, secretly I was a little hopeful. I had been well behaved lately… I mean, kind of.

When we got to his office I noticed it immediately. The baby bouncer mounted to the ceiling and the cutesy little desk next to it. All in front of the glass wall looking into the main work area. Everyone would be able to see me! Naturally, my ear folded and I crossed my arms, pouting.

“Such a Big Helper needs his own desk,”

Daddy lifted and deposited me into the babyish contraption. I might have even given him a fight if it hadn’t been so early. I did start to squirm but that was because the seat of the bouncer forced my soggy diaper up against my privates.

I brought my hands down to try and readjust the strange pressure but Daddy swatted them away.

“Uh-uh, Louis, what don’t little hands do?” He scolded gently. “I was just-“ he cut me off with a single look.

I sighed in resignation, “Little hands don’t play with their diapers…’’

“That’s a good boy,” I blushed as he ruffled what was left of my mane. Daddy then pulled the bouncer’s straps tight around my waste and before I could protest, he locked them in place with a small key.

“We can’t have little lions falling out of their bouncer, now can we?”

The lion grabbed the elasticized band above my head and gave it a yank. The bouncer lifted me off the ground just enough for my stomach to rise, and fall, tempting a giggle to escape from my lips. Instead, I whined and scowled at the larger fur. Daddy chuckled.

“What’s wrong Grumpy Gus? Don’t you like your new desk?”
