The gatehouse of Crossraguel Abbey, near Maybole in Ayrshire. Founded in the 13th century by Duncan, 1st Earl of Carrick. It is halfway between Paisley and Whithorn on the pilgrims' trail to the shrine of St Ninian.

Dunure Castle, Ayrshire. They say that sometimes, you can still hear the screams of Allan Stewart, the Commendator of Crossraguel Abbey, as he was being roasted alive here by the Earl of Cassillis in 1570.

Greenan Castle, near Ayr. The ruin of a 15th C tower house, stands the site of a previous motte and bailey and promontory fort. Tales of family feuds and murder still resonate around this atmospheric cliff top ruin.

636 years ago today. King Robert II died at Dundonald Castle in Ayrshire on 19 April 1390. He began the House of Stewart/Stuart, which ruled Scotland for over two centuries before unifying the crowns of Scotland and England.
