Today In Aviation History: Avro Anson Enters Military Service - Vintage Aviation News

The Avro Anson officially entered military service on March 6, 1936, with RAF No. 48 Squadron, marking the start of a distinguished career in multiple roles. Originally developed for coastal reconnaissance, the twin-engine aircraft later became a cornerstone of Allied aircrew training during World War II, preparing thousands of pilots and crew members under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. More than 11,000 were built, and a handful remain airworthy today.

14,000 Avro employees lost their jobs, many moved to NASA, and the Canadian aeronautical and aviation sector was decimated. #Avro #cdnpoli
"The government then bought 66 second-hand Voodoo fighters from the USA and opted into the Bomarc surface-to-air guided missile system but withdrew over public opinion.
The total cost of these purchases was more than the entire cost of the Avro program."
