English writer John Aubrey, who died OTD in 1697, was a pioneer archaeologist, who recorded (often for the first time) numerous megalithic and other field monuments in southern #England, especially #Avebury https://cromwell-intl.com/travel/uk/avebury/?s=mb #travel #prehistory

I much prefer this to Stonehenge, far larger, fewer visitors, and a VILLAGE in the middle of it!

I finished the Ridgeway in 6 days on Thursday - nearly 87 miles, over 100 with my extension- making the trip 8 days total with the walk from the secret location that will be revealed in the video!

I got to Avebury the day before May 1st - Beltaine - and found out the pagans were doing events there in the morning, so found a random field to crash in until 4am and went and saw the sunrise on West Kennet Long Barrow - an amazing place. Coming full circle (sunset at Ivinghoe, sunrise at West Kennet). It's chamber faces the sunrise, and so I listened to the swallows who live in there chirp and swoop out dramatically about a minute before sunrise

I was alone on West Kennet - actually got there 20 mins early - it was very emotional, then to the Red Lion for the Well Dressing ceremony, I just missed the ceremony proper - they even had a May pole! But it wasn't about communal things for me, it was for John. 1/2
