Can - “Oh Yeah” (1971)
#RIP Kenji “Damo” Suzuki 😞
Here’s my favorite Can song.. Such an incredibly innovative band.
And I just love this video. Damo embodies their whole vibe so perfectly in the footage included here (mostly from a free concert they held in a park in Hamburg).
James Chance and The Contortions - “Contort Yourself” (1979)
Sad to hear about JC’s health and housing issues. The guy is 70 years old and still plays live shows when possible. But he’s suffering from both a health crisis and a financial / housing crisis.
A key figure in the late 70s “No Wave” scene, Chance has been playing a combination of improvisational jazz-like music and punk in such bands as Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, James Chance and the Contortions, and James White and the Blacks (my intro to him was the song “Sax Machine”)
