Painted in 1932 by the French artist Maurice Denis (1870-1943), "Sunlight on the River" (originally titled Reflet de soleil sur la riviere) beautifully illustrates the painter's later explorations of light and natural landscapes. The composition balances the decorative, flat patterning of his earlier career with a softer, atmospheric quality that defines his mature works.
