Ah, I see #Tumblr (#Automattic) has decided to introduce a feature that no one wants/reduce the viability of a feature that's been baked in for over a decade.

Actual Tumblr users are less than pleased.

I feel like each owner of Tumblr fails to understand what its user base wants. I certainly can't see how the latest move will help them gain paying subscribers or more advertisers.

Certainly the change destroys social proof on the platform.

One amendment to my #WordPress rants: With no additional, premium, addons one can NOT build a basic website that meets some minimum requirements for a decent, real world website.
The core is barely enough to get started. And then the lure of “WordPress is Open Source, therefore it’s free to use it” and the super quick breaking of such promise makes me extremely bitter.
And #Automattic could absolutely change it by making the ecosystem less shitty.

… Except there is an "interesting" specificity to that particular Wordpress plugin (packaged with every WP download): it's "free", but… not really.

Akismet works with an API key, that is doled out by Matt's own private company, #automattic

Not to worry, though: it's completely free for most use. You just need to pay if you are a big company with lots of $$$ to spend on comment spam.

And this is the point where Matt started blurring the line between the OSS project and his own company

Tumblrの #ActivityPub 対応、ひと頃は期待もしていたけれど、今更ながらだけど必要ない気がするのよね。
今更リソース費やして再構築しなくても「Tumblr」って名前で #Mastodon サーバ立てて、ソレっぽくカスタマイズすればいいだけの話だし、でもそうしてしまうとソレはTumblrでは無いよね。

#Threads の様なActivityPubに流し込むだけの対応なら、同じ #Automattic 社の #Wordpress がプラグインで実現しているし、とうのThreadsがその対応自体を消極的評価でとりやめてしまうし。
