Level of democracy for the average world citizen is back to 1985
Liberal democracies have become the least common regime type in the world, a total of 29 in 2024.
Nearly 3 out of 4 persons in the world – 72% – now live in autocracies. This is the highest since 1978.
The favorite weapon of autocratizers is media censorship, followed by undermining elections and civil society.
Increasing political violence and pro-democracy mobilization are the most visible trends of the 2024 "Year of Elections".

Democratic backslide a threat to free elections globally
Over half of the 60 countries holding national #elections this year are experiencing a democratic decline, risking the integrity of the electoral process, as reported in the latest #DemocracyReport from the V-Dem Institute.
This is concerning, given the pivotal role elections play in either reinforcing or mitigating the trend of #autocratization.

This week I'm happy to be part of the Summer School on 'Electoral Democracy in Danger?' at the SciencesPo Paris, organized by @r_dassonneville and @RomainLachat . Two days on Affective Polarization and Electoral Integrity are in the books. Tomorrow we will focus on democratic backsliding,and I'm glad about contributing to the program by presenting a piece of my work on typologizing processes of #autocratization.
