Spotlight Feature: Vanessa Riley — Reclaiming the Histories They Tried to Erase
In our mission to elevate Black literacy and amplify the brilliance of Black authors, Head2Toe Magazine & Entertainment is honored to open 2026 by spotlighting a writer whose work reshapes the landscape of historical fiction. Vanessa Riley, award-winning novelist and celebrated storyteller, is a literary force committed to excavating the powerful, forgotten, and intentionally erased histories of Black women and women of color. Her work gives voice to the women history tried to silence. Additionally, it offers readers a new, inclusive lens through which to understand the past.
Fire Sword and Sea
With her forthcoming novel FIRE SWORD AND SEA (William Morrow; On Sale 1/13/26), Riley once again transports readers into a cinematic world where resilience, rebellion, and identity collide. Inspired by the true story of Jacquotte Delahaye, a 17th-century free woman of color who defied gender, racial, and political boundaries to become one of the Caribbean’s most feared pirates. Riley delivers a narrative rooted in strength and liberation. Set against the violent beauty of the 1600s Caribbean, this sweeping epic invites readers into a forgotten world of female power and resistance—challenging the narrow historical narratives we were once given.
Previous Novels
But Vanessa Riley’s mastery doesn’t stop with her newest release. Her previous works have earned extraordinary acclaim and solidified her legacy in contemporary historical fiction. Critics and readers alike continue to celebrate Riley for her fearless storytelling. Stories that honor the brilliance of Black women whose legacies were nearly buried by time.
Jodi Picoult, #1 New York Times bestselling author, praises Riley’s work on Queen of Exiles, saying:
“You may not know Marie-Louise Christophe, but once you have met her, you won’t forget her… this novel commemorates a time when Black women were queens, when race and power intersected, and when true strength meant rebuilding the dignity that was taken from you.”
Riley’s exploration of Haiti’s first and only queen has earned recognition from Kirkus Reviews, Publishers Weekly, Good Morning America, and other major outlets. Her novels, which include Island Queen and Sister Mother Warrior, have been described as bold, immersive, impeccably researched, and transformative. Shedding light on the emotional, political, and cultural forces that shaped the Black diaspora.
What distinguishes Riley is not just her commitment to historical accuracy, but her dedication to telling human stories—stories of sisterhood, triumph, survival, identity, and love. She writes with reverence for the past. But also, with an unflinching awareness of how that past echoes into our present.
Her accolades reflect her impact. She was named:
2024 Georgia Mystery/Detective Author of the Year
2023 Georgia Literary Fiction Author of the Year
Novel Praises
Her work has been praised by The Washington Post, NPR, Entertainment Weekly, The New York Times, and countless others. Yet behind the awards and acclaim stands a woman devoted to excellence, heritage, and truth. Riley holds a doctorate in mechanical engineering and multiple engineering degrees from Penn State and Stanford. This is proof that brilliance can be multidimensional and that creativity and intellect are not mutually exclusive.
When she isn’t crafting her women-centered epics, Riley finds joy in baking her Trinidadian grandmother’s recipes or unwinding on her Southern porch with a strong cup of caffeine. Her presence is as warm and grounded as her writing is daring and expansive.
As Head2Toe continues its partnership with Author Talks, we are committed to pushing forward a cultural movement. A return to reading, a revival of curiosity, and a renewed dedication to supporting Black authors whose voices reshape the world. Vanessa Riley’s work embodies that mission. Through her pages, readers reclaim history, rediscover identity, and remember the power of storytelling.
FIRE SWORD AND SEA is more than a novel—it is a declaration that our stories matter, our ancestors mattered, and the women who came before us deserve their rightful place in history.
Head2Toe is proud to feature Vanessa Riley in our January 2026 issue. We invite our readers to dive into this unforgettable story the moment it releases.
This is history retold. This is truth restored. And this is only the beginning.
