New AFL Domestic Radio Broadcast Deal | AFANA
On Friday, 7th March, just hours before the 2025 regular season kicked off with Sydney hosting Hawthorn at the SCG, the AFL announced a three year extension of its domestic radio broadcast deal with existing broadcasters SEN, Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) (Triple M), Nine Entertainment (3AW and 6PR), FIVEaa in Adelaide, K-rock in Geelong, and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). The contract is effective immediately, and expires at the end of the 2027 season. Although National Indigenous Radio Service (NIRS) is not included in the new deal, it will continue broadcasting AFL games this year. However, the National Ethnic and Multicultural Broadcasters' Council (NEMBC) has ceased AFL broadcasting in English and Spanish, following a management change and its decision this year to "pause the AFL project for 2025, to ensure the council's initiatives are sustainable and continue to benefit all NEMBC members". This adversely affected AFANA and fans in the USA and Canada who depended on Spanish language content as AFANA's main source was NEMBC. In 2023 and 2024, AFANA distributed NEMBC content widely in Latin America with hundreds of downloads of highlights, podcasts, and audio commentary. With the additional loss of televised content on Star+ it has left Latin American fans without AFL access in Spanish this season. This has been a major setback to growth of the game for those audiences.
