“In a recent public post by Joe Louttit, a community leader and organizer of the Peacekeeping program, an estimated $3.5 million street value of drugs and alcohol was prevented from entering the community this past year.”

Every step towards the future counts

By Xavier KataquapitI’m happy to see the ongoing support and assistance in our northern remote communities to help our people cope with so many lifelong and generational issues, trauma and pain that our people carry. It took me many years to understand that these programs or services are not a one-stop service or a single program that will provide instant resolutions or cures for the issues that plague our people. Much of the trauma that our people deal with are issues that affect our communities across generations.

Winter roads now open to the James Bay Coast, the latest ever opening
People on the James Bay Coast can now drive south to Highway 11 and the rest of Ontario. But this is the latest winter road opening ever, with the ice road between Attawapiskat and Moosonee opening earlier this week and the Wetum Road dow...

I dedicated my latest column to my late cousin Joey Okimaw. We grew up together as children in Attawapiskat on the James Bay coast.

We need to do more to protect First Nations from emergencies

Governments at all levels need to take more action to support aging and even deficient infrastructure in our northern First Nations.

I dedicated my latest column to the memory of my life partner, my friend, my mentor, my everything - Mike McGrath. He not only meant so much to me, he was a great positive influence on so many people. #indigenous #firstnations #attawapiskat #love #friendship #nishnawbe #mushkegowuk

Mike was a beacon of love and friendship

By Xavier Kataquapit I lost the love of my life Michael McGrath this past Sunday December 28, 2025. He was a bright light that shone for so many people in our families but also in a circle of friends that seemed to span the world. Mike was born and raised in Iroquois Falls into a grand Irish Canadian family that originated from the Ottawa valley. His mother Emily McGrath imparted in him her kind and gentle spirit, and his grandmother Margaret Dunn, whom everyone knew as Granny, guided and influenced his life.

'A symbol of healing and reconciliation': new church taking shape in remote northern Ontario First Nation
Christmas services in Attawapiskat will once again be held in the First Nation's community hall. But the hope is that next year Catholics in the James Bay Cree community will be celebrating in a brand-new church.

Christmas Is All About Love

Christmas is just around the corner and everyone is getting into the spirit of the holidays with music, decorations, department store shopping and stocking up on food for big family feasts. Decorations are happening everywhere and this year, we had an early supply of cold and snow, so we in the north, will definitely have a picture post card Christmas filled with mounds of white, frost and crystalline snow. This is also a bittersweet time for myself and many other people.

A short doc produced by Legal Advocates For Nature's Defence to highlight 'Here We Stand', a land protest led by my cousin James Kataquapit and his family ... more specifically by James' son Jeronimo Kataquapit. Proud to see my cousins James and his brother David Kataquapit in this production.
