I have been digging bunkers for a while, out of curiosity for their materiality, the implicit madness of their design, their presence as undesired heritage and also their potential for being adapted and appropriated for better human manifestations.
Last week I visited the Mimoyecques, with my partner Mike Rijnierse, in Normandy. The Mimoyecques was a late construction during WWII destined to fail. And so it’s stuck in the earth for 80 years like a bad memory that won’t fade away.
At least bats make use of it, claiming the site for hibernation during winter time. And ferns thrive where there’re the bare minimum conditions of light and moist.
A monument buried in the rubble of history. We explored its resonances.
