L’Italia e Roma ci riprovano ancora.

Athletics, Rome tries again: after the failure of 2027, it runs for a second attempt to host the 2029 or 2031 World Championships.

Italy and Rome are trying again. Following the failure of the bid for 2027 (withdrawn almost two years ago), Rome has re-entered the race to host the 2029 or 2031 World Championships. The Italian Athletics Federation has transmitted the bid to World Athletics. The project was deemed valid by the Government, which, through Minister of Sport Andrea Abodi, produced a letter of support, included in the dossier.

According to the process established by World Athletics, candidate cities can submit until August 5th. In September, the world athletics federation will choose the city that will organize the world championship. Since the World Championships were established – with Italian Primo Nebiolo among the founders – Italy has been the host of the second edition from August 29 to September 6, 1987, at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. The same venue had previously hosted the 1960 Olympics and the 1974 European Championships. In June 2024, the venue at Foro Italico hosted the continental competition for absolute categories with Italy a major protagonist.

The decision comes almost two years after the first failed attempt, when the Italian Athletics Federation communicated the withdrawal of Rome’s bid for the 2027 edition after submitting it a month earlier. The decision, as explained by Fidal in a note, was “consequent to the acknowledgement of the absence of the minimum requirements to participate in the discussion.”

Indeed, a fundamental piece was missing in the documentation presented. The guarantee letter transmitted by the Government, in fact, did not incorporate all the instructions from World Athletics, particularly on an important aspect: the guarantee of coverage of the economic intervention described in the event budget. That is, the 85 million euros in public contributions needed for the organization of the event plus infrastructure investments.
