UK joins European deal to send rejected asylum seekers to third-country hubs

All 46 Council of Europe members sign agreement ‘deplored’ by human rights organisations

The UK and 45 other European countries have signed an agreement that explicitly endorses plans to send unwanted asylum seekers to third country hubs.

A political declaration from the 46 members of the Council of Europe, the body that oversees the European convention on human rights (ECHR), said states had an “undeniable sovereign right” to control their borders.

According to the seven-page document, countries should be free “to address and potentially deter irregular migration”."

DE STRAAT OP vóór SOLIDARITEIT: VLUCHTELINGEN WELKOM

Donderdag 21 mei - 18:30 - Utrecht

Na het geweld van de afgelopen weken is het tijd voor een ander geluid. Wij gaan de straat op vóór solidariteit, wij zeggen WEES WELKOM tegen mensen op de vlucht. Want waar je ook vandaan komt, wat voor huidskleur of religie je ook hebt, uiteindelijk willen en verdienen we allemaal hetzelfde. Een veilig huis, een veilige toekomst voor onze kinderen, betaalbare boodschappen.

Daarom gaan we naast onze buren staan, of ze nou gevlucht zijn of altijd in een veilig land hebben gewoond, of ze een migratieachtergrond hebben of nooit uit hun geboorteland zijn verhuisd. Een samenleving maak je samen.

After the violence of the past few weeks, it's time for a different voice. We are going out into to streets for solidarity, we say BE WELCOME to people currently fleeing. Because wherever you come from, whatever skin colour or religion you may have, in the end we all want and deserve the same. A safe house, a safe future for our children, affordable groceries.

So we stand next to our neighbours, whether they've fled or have always lived in a safe country, whether they have a migration background or have never moved out of their country of birth. Only together we can form a real society.
