The two important hidden parameters of your eye prescription

High myopia & astigmatism: why your lens type matters more than your prescription

BaDos Life

you cannot foresee all the ways #dyslexia #adhd #astigmatism #blindness are expressed in people. so if you are a developer of interactive text-based apps like blogs and *ahem* microblogs (like Mastodon), give people the chance to adjust their #uiux with their own stylesheets.

mastodon looks completely different on my browser than on android exactly because of what i can do with #Firefox and their #CSS addons like Stylish.

democratization of CSS must be an #accessibility priority.

An Update on Halos, Lasers, and User Hostility

A while back, I wrote a post about how dark-mode-only interfaces are a nightmare for people with astigmatism. It got a lot of traction, apparently striking a nerve. Well, I have an update: I got laser eye surgery.

I literally had my corneas reshaped by a high-tech space laser. My vision is now fantastic, and I can finally see without glasses. But guess what? The "halation" effect—that blurry, glowing halo around white text on a black background—isn't entirely gone. It's better, sure, but it's a fundamental part of how optics work. Even with bionic eyes, your beautiful, high-contrast, dark-only UI can still cause eye strain and headaches.

And this is where I need to update my original plea. My focus was on the tyranny of dark-only apps, but the problem is bigger. The problem is the tyranny of any single, forced theme.

**Don't. Ever. Publish. Stuff. That. ONLY. Supports. Dark. Mode.** I mean, I know a LOT of people love dark mode, and given the benefits that darkening interfaces provides... I get it. But there are some people (like me) who may be visually impaired. Astigmatism, for example, can make reading text that is white on dark a real PITA. An effect known as "halation" occurs, where each letter behaves as if it were a flashlight, gaining its own halo of light and making all text read more blurry than normal. No matter how good your glasses are, astigmatism still causes you to see a little blurry—it's something you get used to. But this damn effect makes all the text read as if you don't have your glasses on, or even worse, leading to much more tired eyes or even pain. For everyone's sake, if you really care about accessibility, respect user preferences. If you want a dark interface by default, offer a light version if the user specifies it (in web design, this would be `prefers-color-scheme: light`). The same goes for light interfaces.

What is astigmatism? Why does it make my vision blurry? And how did I get it?

Four in ten people live with astigmatism, which can cause blurred vision and eye strain. Here’s what you need to know.

The Conversation
