In 701 BCE, Judah experienced the full force of #Assyrian might with the invasion of #Sennacherib

Every major city of Judah, save Jerusalem, was besieged and destroyed, with their inhabitants killed or enslaved.

Jerusalem escaped because of the pleading of Hezekiah and the people.

Judah should have learned the need for repentance from this experience, as it was the fulfillment of much of what Isaiah had prophesied.  But would they?

The word of YHWH through #Isaiah, particularly in Isaiah 1:1-12:6, indicted the Judahites, particularly within the king's house and among the elite, for their #transgressions.

Isaiah warned Judah of the imminent threat of #Assyrian domination if they did not repent of their idolatry, abuse of the poor and marginalized, and other such transgressions.

Judah did not repent; Judah would suffer the consequences.

"#ISIS captured #Mosul in 2014, and the group destroyed many of the stone slabs in the palace in 2016 as part of a campaign to erase pre-#Islamic #history. These carvings allowed #archaeologists to compare #biblical accounts with #Assyrian accounts, but that ability is now forever gone. However, photos of some of the bas relief depictions remain, and recent research reveals that Slab 28 may have displayed a carving of #Jerusalem."

Did you know that #Ancient #Greeks & #Romans would use an #Assyrian king to shame self-indulgence?

#Aristotles said that those in power shared the tastes of Sardanapalus - the (fictional) last king of Assyria.

He had male & female concubines, dressed in women's clothes & ate lavishly; he felt that hedonism was the purpose of life.

Due to his lack of virtue, a rival besieged his city & after some years, the king burnt his wealth, his retainers & himself on a pyre.
