Canada's Indian Act marks 150 years
April marks 150 years of Canada's Indian Act. It is colonial legislation designed to assimilate First Nations people into the broader Canadian society. Despite amendments, the act is still in effect today and although it remains largely problematic, it has proved difficult to abolish outright. Joy SpearChief-Morris and CBC Radio's The House did a deep dive into the history of the legislation.

…The proposed changes would put new emphasis on whether applicants would be able to #assimilate into the #US, directing them to take classes on “American history & values” & “respect for cultural norms” [you know which values & cultures they consider American]
The proposals also advise #Trump to prioritize #Europeans who have been “targeted for peaceful expression of views online such as opposition to mass migration or support for ‘populist’ political parties.”
