Photos from today's bike ride on the surprisingly sunny shortest day of the year with @twilwel

Today we cycled all the way through America and then on to Moscow.

A huge detour due to my terrible navigation meant that we covered 26 km between these two places, which is of course a *far* greater distance than that between America and Moscow in real life.

In total, today's ride was 85 km for me (and 10 km more for Harry who continued home from our place after helping me out with apple pie).

We went to Groningen and back, with (after a few of the usual detours) the Bevrijdingsbos (Liberation Forest) as eventual our destination.
30000 maple trees are planted here as a memorial to the Canadian troops who freed the city of Groningen at the end of the second world war. During the four day battle to free Groningen on the 16th of April 1945, 43 Canadian troops were killed by the fascists who occupied the city.

When I arrived back in Assen I had a bit over 70 km on my bike computer, so decided to round it up to 80 km by taking a detour around the city. This turned out to be more difficult than usual because of an event: the TT run. People were running lots of different distances from 500 m for small children all the way to Marathon length, and this meant there were closed roads and cycle-paths to navigate around. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves. It was a bit cold today, but sunny. Nice running weather I should think.

Yesterday's #assenliggers ride was somewhat shorter than usual. Just over 50 km for me, and even that total was only reached because I did an extra loop around Assen just before I got home.

It was dry on the way to the start, but constantly drizzly rain (motregen) set in for the rest of the day.

Anyway, even we all seemed to loose our enthusiasm with the rain, it was still very nice to meet up with the group, including @twilwel, @TheoZw and Gert who is still absent from Mastodon.
