“Ryan Routh, the man named in multiple media reports as a suspect in an apparent assassination attempt on Donald Trump on Sunday, was one of thousands of foreign volunteers who headed to Ukraine after Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
But on arrival in the Polish border town of Medyka, he turned up at the office of the Ukrainian international legion only to be rejected. “They said ‘You’re 56, you’re old and you have no experience’,” Routh, speaking from Hawaii, told the Financial Times in an interview last year. “So why don’t you recruit and co-ordinate?”

Is anyone talking about #crooks having an accomplice (other than that woman behind #trump)? How did he know that roof would be relatively unguarded? Did someone tell him or even make sure he had access? Or did he have another plan and the roof turned out to be a better spot? #assasinationattempt
Trump should never have been allowed to go on stage until that roof was secured. Epic failure that cost the life of a firefighter in the audience.

To any USA people here:

You may find it interesting that 2 months ago there was a very similar failed assassination attempt at slovak prime minister Robert Fico. He is in many ways similar to Trump, we have the same problems with misinformation, polarisation and hate, and the attempt happened before EU parliament election.

So if you want to make any predictions, you have this unique opportunity to look two months into the future

@jhy001 brace yourselves.
This event is always the most offensive, hateful shitshow of the year.
This year was already gonna be extra hypocritical w election denying #GQP
Now- especially with the convention so soon after the #assasinationattempt
They’re gonna turn him into an Emperor. He’ll be kinged at the convention.
You know. Because they’re all constitution loving patriots.

In 1402, the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid was killed in a war between the Ottoman Empire and the Turco-Mongol empire (also known as Timurid), led by the emir Timur Lenk. After his death, the former became the battleground for Bayezid's 4 sons in what became known as the Ottoman Interregnum or the Ottoman Civil War. This war lasted close to 11 years (10 years, 11 months, 2 weeks and 1 day to be more precise), and ended with the victory of the Timurid-supported Mehmed Çelebi.

This was not an uncommon story for Europe or pretty much any place in the world at that time - rulers usually stayed in power for life, and when they died, a civil war would ensue between two or multiple pretenders (usually the sons of the defunct, but not only) in order to win the throne and become the heir of the crown. Sometimes, the civil war would simply have no end, and the state would split for good between them, like in the case of the Carolingian Empire.

Luckily, democracy made it possible for us to no longer need to mess our heads and countries with this. The rulers would be forbidden to govern for their entire lives, or they would be stripped of all their executive powers in favor of someone that would face the same interdiction. The time duration of someone holding that function would be split into multiple limited terms, and the candidates for that function would need to rather convince the people of their own country to choose them, instead of imposing themselves in front of the people by force and with external support, like in Mehmed's case. This process was perfected over time, and was called #election or #voting.

Voting allows regular people like you and me to opt for the #leader they want in power instead of abandoning their jobs, their family, their regular lives, in order to fight for years in the name of the said leader - a fight that would often also turn deadly for themselves. So every single person that wishes the said candidate would be murdered is a person that would like to return to the above status-quo.

The shooter who tried to kill #DonaldTrump last night, was one of them. He (and whoever supported him, if that was the case, even if it was a #Republican) wanted to return to a climate of justified #politicalviolence with the purpose of, at least, eliminating the #candidate he did not like. His fight also turned deadly for himself, being shot by one of the snipers that had the mission of protecting the candidate.

Whichever side you're on, whatever you believe, political violence has no place in a political debate. If it happens often enough for a candidate, then the winner of the election would be more incentivised to resort to as many protections as they can in order feel safe. From this point on, things like persecutions against political opponents or critics and powergrab are just a stone throw away, while #democracy becomes a fading candlelight.

And one last thought: America is today more powerful on the world stage than it ever was in its entire history. It is a model and a place where people in developing democracies around the world look for inspiration. Having candidates at risk of being murdered is not a great look for it overall, and not an encouraging sign for people looking to consolidate the said democracies or fight against dictatorships through peaceful means. It gives despots like Vladimir Putin and other dictators yet another justification for their brutal actions.
