Sparking the flames of openness: 3 Open Education sessions from ASCILITE 2023 - LX at UTS

Mais Fatayer uncovers the latest OER developments down under via 3 ASCILITE presentations.

LX at UTS

Thanks to all the lovelies who attended our #ascilite23 #OEPSIG sesh yesterday! We saw new faces in the room & online which was exciting, & the ideas flowing from all will make Down UndOER a brilliant, community-driven text 🥳

Here’s Mais Fatayer & me being all profesh & conferencey:

Wondering what I need to do to create an #ascilite SIG?? I think we need a Med Ed one! #ascilite23
Many people at #ascilite23 have been bemoaning the lack of a busy Twitter social back channel but I think not obsessively tweeting every idea in every talk has made me process ideas in a bigger and more productive way. Had 2 big ideas and started discussion of projects for them.
“We can’t let students without means fall behind in this… games have an image problem. The stereotype is antiquated - and has been since the turn of the century” the incredible Chelsea Rapp on harnessing video game tech in education at #ascilite23
Holy crap. Watch this sesh 🤩
Very much in agreement with many of Rapp's points but a few too many over generalisations about young people, how technology has impacted society, and a bit too much on audiences and players being passive. #ascilite23 Was this keynote hitting the mark for others in the audience? I suspect a lot of us are gamers and already on this bandwagon.

Chelsea Rapp: "I like to say that crypto is just astrology for men."

Entire audience laughs so loud for this one. #ascilite23

@katiedigc yes I agree. I also not loving the fact that no panel sessions are available for virtual participants. #ascilite23
Introducing new methods with focus on interaction and student discussion can be at odds with student expectations of what constitutes "teaching", e.g. student comment that they don't pay $6k to learn from peers. #ascilite23
AI generated teacher avatars giving content to students lowers barriers to video production, but opens questions about the purpose of video. Is an AI avatar giving the relational aspects of teacher presence? #ascilite23
