Newest collected cane / native bamboo plant! I got the rhizome cutting on August 10th, and was finally able to put it in a container yesterday on the 22nd. It's spent the intervening time in a plastic shopping bag with damp paper towels. It seems to have enjoyed it: it's got very vigorously growing new shoots!

The plant it came from was found on the side of a road next to a cow farm, completely submerged in water.

measured some cane here at 11.5 feet! Or 3.5 meters! Also finally found a nice big rhizome to get a cross section, and it does have air canals! So, seems like it could be #Arundinaria tecta. Now just have to figure out the neighboring one that, so far, does not have air canals in all the rhizomes I've been able to get.

One itty bitty section of #Arundinaria #cane that I'd found flowers on this spring has spent the past few months seemingly dying back -- but all of a sudden, it's got brand new leaves and leaf buds!

The little cane that had flowered and seemed to be dying back is now growing new leaves! August 6

#Arundinaria tecta, as far as I can tell!

(And yes, it's backed up on the Wayback Machine)

This year for the first time my cane (Arundinaria) grew tall enough that (a) some of the stems are big enough to harvest for garden stakes and (b) one of my patches expanded into an area where I need to cut a little bit to preserve one of my garden paths. So this fall I'll be cutting some native bamboo garden stakes! (I'm actually kind of excited about that, because, apparently, I am a giant-grasses nerd AND an enormous tightwad.)
