Can you tell I’ve been working my way through fairytales?
This one is inspired by Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, which has change a lot depending on what century and decade you’ve actually heard it… The version I had in my head wasn’t really informed by “authenticity” nor was it informed by Disney, but instead from my own childhood memories of the tale.
I like to pick a moment or a “feeling” from the stories I illustrate and kind of lean into them with a mind toward symbolism and simplification. Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh and her contemporaries in the Glasgow Four made a lot of work that alluded to poems, pieces of literature, stories, legends, myths, “feelings”. This is just another piece in that vein.
I started with a coffin shape, then moved on to symmetrical “portraits” of large-nosed men I made to allude to the dwarves in the tail. I also put in an apple to balance the two sides since there are only seven dwarves…
The textures and subtle hints at color are what I really love about this piece, though. I invented a Procreate brush for this piece that captured some canvas texture and made it into a stamp that I could make look like “built up paint”. I’ve used it over and over again on a lot of pieces since then!
