In an effort to push even deeper into GNU/ #Linux Nerd-dom, I've been considering my options for going #Systemd-less so I can be just a little bit more snooty about my #OSS software choices. `/s`
- convert existing #Arch install to #Artix
- go real old school with #Slackware
- #void #voidlinux
As much as I have a soft spot for the nostalgia of slackware, I think pacman and the Arch repos have really spoiled me.
I may wind up on Artix, but I'm going to at least give void a try and see.
Okay, I'm down to it here. I need to decide which non-#systemd OS I'm switching to (for the next five minutes, anyway; curse my DistroHopper nature...)
Here's the list I'm down to, although I am open to suggestions:
* **#Alpine**: PRO - Super fast and lightweight, I'm fairly familiar with the toolset; CON: Limited package set and support, no easy path for Noctalia/Dank install
* **#Artix**: PRO: Based on Arch with Arch tooling including Pacman and AUR access. Easy install. CON: Embracing #xLibre, which is run by a... fellow of questionable beliefs, let's be nice. Would have to do extra work to run Wayland instead with uncertain future

Dylan "I read the law and I'm here to implement it" M. Tylor gets up in the morning and decides to write age verification code that he himself calls "hilariously pointless and ineffective", within a week strikes 4 repos off his list, and i bet the Linux Kernel is going to be next (I'm joking... mostly)
It's worth noting that the first people who approved the PR on systemd repo are 2 big tech employees - Mircoslop and Redhat/IBM (why I'm i not surprised!!), someone then opened a revert PR, Lennart Poettering (systemd creator) closed it.. thus blocking the removal
And this is why you now have Liberated Systemd, a fork of systemd without Age verification.. which IS 'hilariously pointless and ineffective' at saving children
when engineers starts reading the law like a specification, this is what you get.. useful idiots.

Honestly.. at first i was surprised (and disappointed) at some major Linux distributions not having a clear answer to age verification laws after weeks of their announcement, but then lots of them started discussing them. really! discussing them! what's there to be discussed?
"maybe we can implement age checks in a privacy respecting manner? 👉👈"
And it's just so happens this serves the corporation that you work for best interests! Big tech "Foss devs" have a clear conflict of interest here

Curious to hear any first hand accounts how it went. Seems pretty straightforward reading through the migration instructions.
@c401mh3 But I wouldn’t make any changes yet. As of now, the issue is way overblown. It's currently an optional birthdate field, nothing more. It may come to nothing. Never hurts to look into options though to get ahead of things if and when there is a real problem.
Some people call it a "slippery slope" but I'm not so sure. Does the inclusion of the birthdate field make it harder to resist actual age/id verification in the future?
On the other hand, mass protests and outrage may send the message that users don't want this kind of thing. Moving away from #systemd and corporate RedHat (first distro I used back in 2000 or so!) influence may be a good idea given the way the world is going with increased corporate and government control of tech.
Personally I use #arch and have been looking at #artix to get a similar experience, but with a choice of init system. #openbsd is another option for going non-corporate. Thanks for reminding me to look into #gentoo as well 😃
