Just had a thought… y’know how famous artists always had “muses”? And there’s fairly broad agreement that a most artists are some flavor of neurodivergent?

What if art muses aren’t magically inspirational, but rather body-doubling the artist, so they could get past their own executive dysfunction (aka, creative blocks)?

The Story Behind the Song

When Joni Mitchell arrived in the Cretan fishing village of Matala in the spring of 1970, she had just ended her relationship with Graham Nash. It was here, in this hippy retreat that she met red haired Cary Raditz, the ‘Mean Old Daddy’ behind the song Carey …
Raditz was working as a chef at the Delphini Taverna. Their initial meetings were rough, as he resented the way his friends were drawn into the rising star’s circle of friends.
“I just saw that she was coming into town. And these friends of mine, who I thought were pretty good drinking buddies, were now turning into the idiots that I didn’t like – the love and peace hippies“
Eventualy, after a meeting without the entourage in tow, the two clicked and began spending more time together - Mitchell even moving into the cave where Raditz lived. She remained there for nearly 2 months.
Carey wasn’t the only song inspired by the ‘Red red rogue’. In California she sings
“I met a redneck on a Grecian Isle
Who did the goat dance very well,
He gave me back my smile
But he kept my camera to sell.
Oh that rogue, that red red rogue,
He cooked good omelettes and stews
And I might have stayed on with him
But my heart cried out for you, California.”
Although the affair ended when Mitchell moved on, the friendship continued … the two meeting up several more times over the years.
For more on their fascinating relationship read Kate Mossman’s interview with Raditz in The New Statesman.

💔Couples💔

Born Cécile Vidil in 1891, Lucy Krohg was an independent teen who entered the circle of artists gathered around Montparnasse and Montmartre becoming a model and muse for many of them. In 1909, she met Bulgarian artist Jules Pascin and began a brief, intimate affair. By 1911 Lucy had shifted her attentions to Norwegian artist and dancer Per Krohg and the two were married in 1915.
Pascin left Paris in 1914 with his fiancée Hermine David, and they married in 1918. He returned in 1920 and continued to seek the company of the now married Lucy Krohg. In 1921, Per Krohg left briefly for Norway, and Pascin and Hermine David's relationship ended in separation. Lucy was committed to her marriage, but cared for Pascin, who had become dependent on alcohol and and was threatening suicide. Lucy led a double life, maintaining her marriage and looking after Pascin. This arrangement lasted for three years until Krohg removed himself from the situation taking their son with him.
In 1930, when his own solo exhibition was to be opened, Pascin committed suicide in his studio. First, he cut his wrists and wrote Adieu Lucy on the wall with blood and then hanged himself. His body was discovered by Lucy. In his will Pascin shared his estate between his wife, Hermine David, and Lucy.
