Lunar Litter
Things left on the moon

Stereoscopy (Full Moon View, 1898) covered with miniature objects that represent the items left behind on the moon during various spaceflight missions: in addition to space probes, lunar vehicles, and other technical equipment, these include, for example, a bible, used diapers, soap, tools, golf balls, and cameras. See also NASA’s “Catalogue of Manmade Material on the Moon.” To date, 190 t of material have been left behind during the missions.

SMART 1 / crash site

Replica of a work by the painter Donato Creti (1671-1749) from the series ‘Astronomical Observations’ (1711), which was commissioned by the artist - painted and minimally altered by a copyist. The copyist added a small shadow to the depiction of the moon that refers to the crash site of the lunar probe SMART 1 (ESA), which was deliberately destroyed in 2006 after a mission lasting several years. The outlines are based on a photograph taken by NASA's lunar probe ‘Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter’, which captured the crash site.

The work was realized in the frame of an Artist-in-Science Residency at European Space Agency - ESA / ESOC in Darmstadt in 2022, hosted by Kultur einer Digitalstadt e.V..

Space Journey / Tesla

Risograph, inspired by the movement pattern of the Tesla (white) launched into space by Elon Musk as a PR stunt in 2018, the blue line shows the orbit of the Earth, the yellow line that of Mars.

The work was realized during an Artist-in-Science Residency of the artist at the European Space Agency (ESA) hosted by Kultur einer Digitalstadt in Darmstadt in 2022.

The print was produced by Herr und Frau Rio in Munich and is a limited, signed and numbered edition.

Space Journey / Gaia

Risograph, inspired by the movement pattern of the space telescope ‘Gaia’ (ESA), which has been mapping our galaxy since it was launched in 2013. Among other things, the data collected has been used to create the most detailed map of the Milky Way to date. The telescope was decommissioned on 27 March 2025

Lunar Litter (Jettison Bag) or Things we left on the moon

Garbage bag, inspired by the so-called “jettison bags” used in space travel. I had two of these bags produced and embroidered with the lettering “lunar litter only.” On May 23, 2023, one bag was sent to the HQ of NASA with the request that it be taken to the moon as part of the Artemis II mission, planned for 2025, to retrieve some of the 190 tons of material left behind by NASA during the Apollo missions.

You find all the objects that were left behind on the moon listed in the "Catalogue of Manmade Material on the Moon" by NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration here: https://www.nasa.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/final-catalogue-of-manmade-material-on-the-moon.pdf

I realized the work with the help of my wonderful assistant Joana Bacelar.
Installation view of my exhibition "Instant Paradise" at Villa Dessauer Bamberg (Museen der Stadt Bamberg) in 2023.

REMINDER
The exhibition "Infinity - Empitness - Liveliness" at Planetarium Hamburg can still be visited until May 31st! Where Art meets Science in Space.

What do our imagination of Outer Space have in common with our imagination of the Arctic? And why is it important to become aware of our cultures of perceptions for creating more just and sustainable futures?

The exhibition was realized by Die Junge Akademie (Anne Hemkendreis, Oliver Rymek, Timo de Wolff, Professor Michael Saliba) and hosted by Planetarium Hamburg.

STERNTALER / THE STAR MONEY

Contemporary interpretation of the fairytale "Sterntaler" (engl. “The Star Money or Start Talers”) from the Children‘s and Household Tales of the Brothers Grimm. The artist gazes into the evening sky, where a string of Starlink satellites manufactured by SpaceX can be seen flying in a row alongside stylized stars. The work is a collaboration between Swaantje Güntzel and the Darmstadt-based photographer Andreas Zierhut. It was created during an Artist-in-Science Residency Güntzel held at the European Space Agency (ESA/ESOC) in Darmstadt in 2022, realized by Kultur einer Digitalstadt (KeD).

The work is currently on display in the exhibition "Infinity - Emptiness - Liveliness" at Planetarium Hamburg. Organized by Junge Akademie, curated by Anne Hemkendreis. The exhibition can be visited until May 31st, 2025.
